Lois was born in Hamilton,On but spent most of her childhood in nearby towns of Burlington and Oakville. She was the only female in a large family of six children. Home life was all about family togetherness, with annual outings to the great Ontario north where the family enjoyed the magnificent beauty of Algonquin Park and surrounding Muskoka. That is no doubt where she developed her great love of the outdoors where she spends a lot of her time with nature.
From an early age, Lois felt the “need to create” and was always encouraged by her parents who were involved in the arts in their own right both in music and painting. During her school years, she always excelled in art which was her most exciting subject.
Throughout her adult life, she always pursued creative activities until once her own children were in their teens, Lois enrolled in evening classes at a local art society whilst attending night school in library sciences. From that point onward she studied and practiced her art until she was ready to apply to many juried exhibitions to show her work. For 25 years Lois has continued to enjoy a painting career. Her paintings have traveled far and wide from Canada, U.S.A., South America and western Europe.
During those years she relocated to Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON where she owned and operated a bed & breakfast and home studio/gallery in one of the town’s oldest homes built in 1818 shortly after the war of 1812. This home was once an inn called “The Rising Sun” hence the B & B and studio/gallery derived it’s name.
Lois has had a long love affair with the charming and historic town of NOTL. She expresses that love by depicting the local scenery and architecture as well as bold florals. Many commissions over the years have resulted from her work.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My painting career started with working in watercolour and eventually led to oil and onto acrylic. Most of my work demonstrates “light” providing mood and excitement to the piece. I tend to work in “alla prima” (wet in wet) method which has always been my preference in all mediums. The act of painting has allowed me to “respond physically” to what I love in the world around me.
